Parking Maintenance Person

The City of Pittsfield's Department of Public Services is seeking to fill the position of Parking Maintenance Person. This position entails routine maintenance of City parking garages, parking lots, grounds and sidewalks, which require mowing, sweeping, landscaping, shoveling, sanding, salting, and removing debris and trash. The maintenance duties are semi-skilled and do not require journeyman trade or craft knowledge.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of City-owned establishments including but not limited to: buildings, parking lots, parking garages, park pavilions, etc.
• Performs janitorial duties that may include trash removal, cleaning, dusting, sweeping, washing, buffing and waxing floors, washing windows, changing light bulbs, etc.
• Aids in the maintenance of parking lots, garages, and grounds by mowing, sweeping, landscaping, and repairing of garage infrastructure, as well as removing debris and trash; Able to maintain and safely operate chain saws and other mowing and trimming equipment.
• Assist in streetscape beautification projects; helps maintain flower beds and gardens throughout the City of Pittsfield.
• Performs outdoor maintenance all year round: grass cutting, sweeping and keeping grounds neat and clean, shoveling, snowplowing and sanding walkways, driveways, parking areas and steps as appropriate.
• Maintaining public parking meters, i.e, cleaning, and removal of snow/ice on and around them.
• Trims, cuts and maintains city trees and vegetation.
• Performs related unskilled labor duties such as cleaning, picking up litter and debris, emptying trash, graffiti removal and cleaning restrooms.
• Participates in Snow Removal operations.
• Assist in operations for striping streets, crosswalks, parking areas as well as legends. 
• Assist in operations for installing, maintaining, adjusting and repairing traffic signs. 
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Massachusetts Class D driver’s license.
• Working knowledge of modern building cleaning materials and methods, as well as the equipment used and ability to operate them safely and efficiently.

• Previous building and ground maintenance experience preferred.
• Ability to interact with people on an up-beat and friendly basis, regardless of circumstances.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The incumbent works in various dynamic municipal buildings and locations.  While performing the duties of the Parking Maintenance Person, the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City.  Frequent periods of outside work may be entailed, subject to all weather conditions and extremes.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to utilize all machines, devices, tools used in maintenance work. Move throughout the municipal buildings and property which may include flights of stairs. Regular and sustained periods of strenuous physical exertion, requiring stability to lift, carry and position heavy objects utilizing proper mechanics and techniques. May periodically be required to operate a computer to access e-mail. Continuous walking, standing, climbing; frequent periods requiring sustained uncomfortable physical positions. Must be able to push/pull/lift objects weighing up to 50lbs.

HOURS

Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week

SALARY

Starting rate $16.28 - $17.27 an hour

Annual increases up to $22.54 an hour
