Work is generally performed in all weather conditions, with exposure to hazards associated with chemicals used for treating domestic sewers, trenches confined spaces, construction sites and heavy equipment operation. Responsibilities include responding to emergencies during non-working hours on an “on call” basis. Periodically required to work at night and on weekends.
Operates tapping machine, mechanical rodder, jack hammer, pipe cutters, water pumps and other tools and equipment related to water and sanitary sewer system maintenance and construction; operates light trucks , backhoe, front end loader and miscellaneous types of equipment essential to the job.
Position requires routine contact with the customer base and other Town employees, as well as contractors, which requires courteous behavior.
Errors in the field could result in inadequate service delivery, insufficient water pressure, poor water quality, damage to equipment or facilities, or result in a potential danger to the health and safety of the public.

Position requires work as part of a field crew and participates in the construction, repair and maintenance of water and sewer mains, fire hydrants, service lines, meters, pumps, valves, catch basins and other appurtenances relative to the water distribution system and sanitary sewer collection system.
Position operates heavy and specialized equipment, including backhoe and front end loader in connection with construction, maintenance and repair activities; excavates and backfills trenches, installs mains, service lines, gates and additional facilities. Performs maintenance and service related the operation of the equipment.
Installs, repairs, tests water meters; repairs mains, hydrants and associated fittings, tests pressure of water pipes; operates leak detection equipment and pipe location equipment to detect and repair water main breaks; cleans and disinfects pipes; cleans and repairs manholes.
Cleans, repairs and televises sewer mains, drain lines and has the ability to understand failures and potential failures in such, and report to the Foreman. Cleans and repairs sewer manholes and/ or catch basins.
Assists with the testing and monitoring the safety of the water supply for the Town. May read and record information on charts weekly at various pumping stations regarding chlorination, pressure and usage. Ensure that chemical feed pumps are properly mixing and feeding chlorine and other control chemicals at the water’s source.
Responds to emergency situations; assists with corrective actions and repair procedures.
Landscapes and repairs roadways, sidewalks or other surfaces disturbed in gaining access to other infrastructure needing repair, replacement or maintenance.
Performs similar or related work associated with plowing and or snow removal during the winter months.
Qualified applicants should possess or have the ability to attain the following licenses;
CDL class B with air brake endorsement
Mass Hoisting Engineers class 2B
Mass Drinking Water Operator’s License Grade 2D and 1T
Mass Backflow Device Tester’s License
Mass Backflow Surveyor’s License
