Schantz Galleries Contemporary Glass, located in Stockbridge Massachusetts, is looking for a local person to work with the Director and Staff to assist with sales, correspondence with clients, record keeping as well as assistance in handling and packing of artwork and other light maintenance. Candidate must be well versed in the art world and present a professional appearance and attitude. Our gallery is a destination and known for the museum-quality art exhibited. We have been providing the best customer service in the region to our clients and artists since 1982.

The Gallery Assistant interacts positively and in a professional manner professional with the customer base to educate and assist in purchase of artwork. Additional duties include installing, packing and shipping of artwork, preparing condition reports and photographing artworks as needed, completing critical paperwork and maintaining database entries such as inventory with accuracy and attention to detail. It is important that the candidate possess the people skills and situational awareness to work with staff in a seamless way and be able take direction as needed to complete the task at hand. Is familiar with art terminology.

The art handling aspect of this position is as needed, to assist the director and shipping manager during preparation for shows. The candidate will be taught how to handle and properly wrap art work, select proper packing materials in order to pack and crate artworks of all descriptions.
With a range of clientele such as museums, private collectors, and corporations, we strive to meet the special needs of everyone on a personal level. On any given day our unique team may be educating visitors at the gallery about the work, cataloging inventory, packing and moving work for the artist or collector.

The ideal candidate has a background in the arts and is familiar with art terminology; has strong communication skills and is great at customer service and sales follow-up. Applicant should be comfortable with conversing with visitors daily and have computer and art database skills. It is important that the applicant be able work together as a team, and is always ready to jump in and do whatever is needed to complete a job.

A degree in art or bachelor’s degree and minimum of two years combined arts and sales background is required for this position. Typing and computer skills in art system management are required, (we will train in the specific data system we use.) Some lifting up to 50 lbs. is required. If you do not have art glass handling experience, we will train. Hours vary 4-5 days per week. we do guarantee 30 hrs. Weekends are an important time in the gallery, so if this is not convenient, please disregard this opportunity. There is potential for this position to grow into a year-round position with additional benefits.

Art sales

Keep accurate records of art inventory.

Maintain digital images files and info in database.

Various types of written correspondence to artists and clients

Write and edit artist biographies.

Establish and maintain relationships with clients.

Assist with handling and packing art with safe and proper methods.

Social Media Postings


Bachelor’s Degree in studio art, art history or museum studies.

Proven Sales Experience

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Computer skills with Art Base System, Excel, Google sheets, Photoshop.

Effective time management.

Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

Driver’s License with clean driving record

Job Type: 30 hours/week

Salary: based on experience, competitive with high level art gallery pay rate
