Opening Details

Williams College is pleased to announce a year-round, 36 hours per week position as a Technical Assistant in the Chemistry department. This position reports to the Chair and will work closely with faculty, support staff, and students.The Technical Assistant will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the general chemistry laboratories and administration of lecture demonstrations.

This position requires fully in-person work. Remote work arrangements will not be available at this time.

Responsibilities
  • General operation and timely setup of the introductory and biochemistry teaching laboratories and assistance with the summer science outreach program. This includes preparation of reagents and student unknowns, maintenance of chemical inventory and various instrumentation associated with these labs: pH meters, analytical balances, spectrophotometers, etc., and appropriate handling of hazardous waste.
  • Shared coordination and assembly of chemistry lecture demonstrations. Organization and maintenance of equipment and chemical inventories in the departmental demonstration room. Maintenance of the lecture demonstration manual, procedures, and safety protocols. Research and development of new demonstrations for lectures as requested.
  • Shared organization and set-up of the annual "Demo Day" as well as other outreach programs.
  • Upper-level lab support.
  • Shared scheduling, organization, and supervision of student workers.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or an equivalent combination of education plus 2 or more years of experience in a laboratory setting with preference for additional years of experience
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • The ability to work effectively independently and cooperatively with faculty and staff
  • The ability to multitask and prioritize in a dynamic environment
  • Experience with word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn new skills to support the changing needs of the department
