Senior Wire Inspector
On Call
Government/Public Service
High School or Equivalent

Professional, administrative, technical and inspection work related to the enforcement and interpretation of the National Electric Code, Massachusetts Electrical Code, City ordinances, and other applicable codes and provisions of the Massachusetts General Laws relating to electrical installations; other related work, as required. Visits construction sites and residences, performs inspection, and makes recommendations for improvement.


  • Inspects and tests new and existing wiring systems in buildings and structures as well as street wiring for conformity with national, state and municipal electrical codes and safe practices.
  • Inspects the installation, maintenance, alteration, repair and removal of electrical lighting, heating and power systems, appliance apparatus, and origin.
  • Makes determinations as to what constitutes safe or unsafe installation.
  • Advises electricians, builders, owners, architects, and engineers on electrical problems, materials, and methods and interprets codes, laws, and regulations.
  • Responsible for reviewing and approving drawings as they pertain to any proposed electrical work.
  • Issues electrical permits for the installation, extension, or repair of electrical lighting, heating and power systems, appliances and apparatuses well as fire and security systems.
  • Enforces conformity with municipal by-laws or ordinances, and issues orders for correction of hazards.
  • Performs related duties as required.


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Massachusetts Licensed Journeyman Electrician with at least two years of experience as a journeyman electrician or two year’s training in a recognized college of electrical engineering
  • Well versed in approved methods of electrical construction for safety to life and property, the status of the Massachusetts Electrical Code, as amended relating to electrician work and regulations of the National Electrical Code
  • The ability to read and interpret the Massachusetts Electrical Code, and the National Electrical Code.
  • Valid Driver’s License, Class D.
  • Extensive knowledge of fire and security systems.
  • The ability to work alone to troubleshoot and repair electrical equipment and systems.
  • Requires strong communication skills to work effectively with a diverse population.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.


Some work is performed in office conditions; primarily involves field visits with exposure to variable weather conditions, with occasional walking, standing and climbing. Exposure to loud noise and the hazards associated with construction sites, including exposure to potentially dangerous materials and electrical wiring. The workload fluctuates according to construction activity and other events; attends meetings of City boards.

While performing the duties of the Senior Wire Inspector, the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City.


Operates standard office equipment including computers and keyboards, an automobile, and inspection tools; moves throughout the office/building and inspection sites which may include flights of stairs. Lifts/moves objects weighing up to 10-20 pounds.




Starting salary $25.04 - $26.43

Annual Increases up to $ 31.96
