 The Dalton Fire District Water Dept seeks qualified, experienced, and energetic candidates for a position in the Water Department. This position is full-time, 40 hours/week. Salary commensurate with experience.  

BASIC FUNCTIONS

  • Operates and repairs Water Distribution system.
  • Is responsible to the public for ensuring that water quality is in compliance with the Federal Safe Water Drinking Act and the rules and regulations of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

 SCOPE OF POSITION

  • Operator / laborer on water dept. projects, repairs, service lines, mains, hydrants, etc.
  • Ability to operate backhoe, mini excavator, tractor and various other motorized equipment.
  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance on motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Operate distribution system and perform preventative maintenance.
  • Is on call to respond to emergencies.

 PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Maintains daily logs at the treatment facility and pump sites.
  • Performs daily rounds at all sites across the system.
  • Maintains a list of materials used on repairs and projects.
  • Responds to inquiries of residents or others pertaining to the District Water System.
  • Carries out a variety of Preventive Maintenance Programs.
  • Assists in all required water sampling for the district.
  • Ability to work rotating weekends as per scheduled.
  • Monthly, Semiannually, and annually meter readings.
  • Promotes positive community relations by responding to inquiries in a minimal amount of time.
  • Helps other Departments in the District and Town.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.
  • Efficiently and accurately performs dig safe mark-outs as directed.
  • Performs hydrant replacement, maintenance and flushing as directed.

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess a valid Massachusetts Drivers License.
  • Possess or possess the ability to acquire a Grade I Treatment and a Grade II Distribution, Massachusetts Drinking Water Supply License within 18 months.
  • Possess or possess the ability to acquire a hydraulic license (2A-1C) within 18 months.
  • Possess or possess the ability to acquire a Back Flow Prevention Device Testing License within 18 months.
  • Certified Surveyor for Back Flow Prevention or possess the ability to become a certified surveyor within 3 years.
  • Is available to respond to problems which occur at any time.
  • Must have general knowledge of vehicle and equipment repair.
  • 2 years’ experience as an operator or equivalent in construction or maintenance of a water distribution system would be benifitial.

ADDITIONAL ATTRIBUTES

  • Although it is not required the Operator / Labor Person live in the Town, he / she must live within a distance which is close enough to the Town that he / she is able to respond to any condition within a reasonable time. (15 Minutes)

  • Understand and follow all safety procedures related to job responsibilities.
  • Understand and properly operate tools and equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, coworkers, and the general public.
  • Follow directions on projects.
