Responsibilities & Objectives:
This is a non benefited position, driving the Cheshire COA van for the safe transport of senior citizens in a reliable and courteous manner according to a per diem schedule assigned by the Cheshire Council on Aging Coordinator of Activities & Volunteers or designee and reporting to same. Travel will be to various destinations in Cheshire and surrounding communities. This position is for 19 hours per week.
Duties include but not limited to operating and maintaining the COA van with a focus on safety and client courtesy and respect, utilizes and operates cell phone, drives in all weather conditions, perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, keep van clean and sanitized at all times, perform minor maintenance tasks when necessary, fuel vehicle, ensure that periodic maintenance is completed & reported, collect suggested donations and/or fares when applicable, document client usage, prepare trip reports, prepare accident and incident reports as necessary, assist passengers in and out of van as required, lock and secure van at the end of the day and provide other services as requested by management when not engaged in transportation service. Turn in all reports in a timely manner, preferably the next day to supervisor.
Makes frequent contacts requiring perceptiveness, discretion, and empathy for the needs of senior citizens. May have access to confidential information concerning program participants and their families. Most of work performed on the road with exposure to all weather conditions and general hazards of driving a van. Operates a lift equipped passenger van. Makes frequent contact with elderly passengers and Cheshire COA staff personnel and occasional contact with the families of same and other town officials. Errors in judgment could result in considerable delay and loss of service, damage to equipment, possible injuries, and negative feedback to the COA or town officials.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent
Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License specific to transporting individuals
Pass a Defensive driving course
Pass a Disability Awareness course
Pass a CORI check
Basic First Aid & CPR
Good Driving Record
Pre employment and random drug testing
Take & pass required Certifications to operate van lift
Understand & perform Van Sanitizing
Understand & perform COVID-19 rider review
Ability to understand & follow oral instructions
Ability to establish & maintain an effective working relationship with peers and supervisor
Ability to perform duties with little if any supervision
