We have a Temp to Hire Opportunity for a Peer Counselor to work with an area non-profit. A Peer Counselor works with individuals with disabilities to help them achieve the greatest level of independence possible. As a Peer Counselor, you would provide counseling, advocacy, skills training, and information & referral services. The ideal candidate for this role would be someone who successfully manages their own disability or has previously worked with this population. There would be a pay increase at the time of hire with the client. (approximately 3 months)
Essential Functions for Peer Counselor:

  • Serves as a “ Peer Counselor” to people with disabilities. Draws from self-experience to empower and help consumers work through common issues and problems.

  • Becomes familiar with available programs and services in order to help consumers achieve their independent living goals.

  • Works as a team member to ensure that consumers receive quality services.

  • Provides short term independent living skills training to Consumers.

  • Advocates for consumers. The Peer Counselor advocates for consumers on any issue of concern to them that affects their independent living. An appropriate referral is made when legal advocacy is needed.

  • Provides consumers with needed information and/or makes appropriate referrals to other agencies, providers, etc...

  • Maintains and submits all required and appropriate documentation in a timely manner. This includes entering case notes and statistical data iinto database.

  • Attends meetings, trainings, and conferences as required.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Program Manager or Executive Director.
