Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Atomic Physics and Precision Measurements
Physics and Astronomy Department
Williams College is pleased to announce an opening for a full-time (40 hours/week), two-year term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the possibility of renewal for a third year. Under the guidance of Professor Tiku Majumder, work in this laboratory focuses on high-precision diode laser spectroscopy of heavy atoms with the goal of testing the latest atomic theory and testing fundamental physics. Further information regarding recent and ongoing research projects can be found at http://sites.williams.edu/pmajumde/.
The successful candidate will be expected to help lead the work of the laboratory in all areas including experimental design and new apparatus construction, theoretical modeling and detailed data analysis, and dissemination of work through scientific talks, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications. The candidate will also be encouraged to think broadly about new experimental ideas that may serve as tests of the latest theoretical developments and proposals both within and well-beyond atomic physics.
The Postdoctoral Research Fellow position offers the additional opportunity for the applicant to become involved in the educational life of the Williams College Physics and Astronomy Department through interactions with undergraduate students at all stages of their education, including senior honors research projects, the teaching laboratory, or during the month-long January teaching term. The Physics and Astronomy Department at Williams graduates 25 majors per year, with more than half enrolling in Ph.D. programs in physics and related fields. The department features five experimental and four theoretical physicists, as well as three astronomers, all with active research programs. In the area of AMO experiment, there are currently three NSF-funded experimental laboratory groups at Williams. Additional information can be found at http://physics.williams.edu/.
Requirements:
- Doctoral degree in Physics or a related field
- Strong background in experimental physics is essential; experience in relevant areas of laser and atomic physics techniques is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with computing, modeling, data collection, signal processing and data analysis tools standard in this field.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work both independently and with a team which includes junior researchers
