The full time Assistant Building and Grounds (B&G) Engineer works with the Buildings and Grounds Engineer to inspect and maintain all HVAC systems and equipment. Also assists with the testing and maintenance of facility systems, including but not limited to fire alarms, sprinklers, emergency generators, and sewage pumps.

This position requires a motivated individual, who has the ability to work independently and with others. Must be neat and organized with excellent communication skills and the ability to interact with all types of customers. Must also have the ability to problem solve and take direction constructively from others.

Work schedule is 1st Shift: Monday and Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Wednesday/Thursday are the days off.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Daily checks of all HVAC equipment
  • Monitor HVAC controls to ensure comfort of patrons and tenants
  • General maintenance of HVAC equipment, including but not limited to: Belts, Filters, and Lubrication
  • Ensuring that maintenance schedules are followed
  • Testing and repairs of exit signs and emergency lights
  • Assist with fire alarm and sprinkler testing
  • Monitor and adjust closed heat loop chemical treatment
  • Performing some light plumbing, electrical and mechanical work
  • Assist with event set ups and break downs as necessary
  • Required for calls and responding to emergencies as directed by Manager
  • Required to work all festivals and occasional events
  • Assists in development and research of energy reduction techniques and programs
  • Assist with estimating time and materials for projects, obtaining permits, assists and monitors inspections as required.
  • After hours on call duty as needed with or for B&G Engineer.
  • Work overtime as assigned by supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as required*.

*Each of the positions in the Buildings and Grounds department serves as one unit of the whole team, and as such, is subject to assist or is assigned to tasks in other trades within the classification.

  • Education: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years HVAC experience required.
  • Preferred knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, testers and other equipment used in the HVAC trade; principles of operation of systems; occupational hazards and safety practices of trade; national, state and local code standards.
  • Ability to follow directions and follow through on assignments; handle multiple deadlines and changing priorities; work independently; read, interpret and update blueprints; estimate time and materials; use all types of hand and power tools; to attend required training courses; maintain proficiency in the trade; maintain accurate schedules and records; work at heights to 40 feet; follow industry and reasonable safety standards and practices to ensure safety to self and others; operate snow removal equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

Work Conditions

  • Indoor/Outdoor work in uncontrolled temperature environments is required.
  • Must be physically able to perform heavy work on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with construction level noises.
  • Must be available to work weekends and assigned schedule.

Work schedule is Monday and Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 1st shift.

Physical Requirements

  • Physically able to do required work which could include some heavy and sustained lifting (up to 50 lbs.) squatting, bending, stooping, carrying, climbing of ladders up to 25 feet, work an 8-hour shift, and other functions.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written directions, instructions, and safety information in order to safely perform job functions.
  • Must be able to wear PPE as needed.

As defined by the National Labor Relations Act, this position is part of the bargaining unit for UAW Local 2110.

Non-exempt. Minimum starting wage: $19.50.
