Opening Details

Williams College is looking for an Associate Dean of the Faculty to act as the Dean's chief of staff and senior strategic partner.

The Dean of the Faculty's office is responsible for the recruitment, appointment, promotion, and compensation of faculty members. It also works to support faculty teaching, scholarship, and creative work; to oversee faculty governance structures; to facilitate curricular and faculty development; to promote efficient workflow within academic departments and programs; and to facilitate communications between academic and non-academic operations. The Dean's office comprises a total of 10 staff FTE to support the faculty in these ways, and the faculty itself comprises approximately 270 tenured and tenure-track members, plus another 70 or so not on tenure-track, and 40-50 visiting FTE each year.

The Associate Dean of the Faculty for Academic Affairs has knowledge of and understands faculty work, but is not a member of the faculty. This is a non-rotating administrative position which is meant to provide leadership continuity in the Dean's office.

Williams College is committed to building an inclusive community where members of all backgrounds can thrive. We strongly encourage candidates from underrepresented groups or those who have experience working with a broadly diverse population to apply.

  • Collaborate with the Dean on planning and strategy, and help to interpret and implement academic policies
  • Oversee faculty hiring and compensation processes
  • Oversee fiscal management and stewardship of the Dean of the Faculty office accounts, as well as budget development for the academic units
  • Supervise two members of the Dean's staff and help to mentor others
  • Coordinate the decennial self-study and external review process for academic units and the department of physical education
  • Serve as the Dean's representative on various committees, task forces, and working groups, including the periodic accreditation review team
  • Seek and maintain collaborative partnerships between the Dean of the Faculty office and other administrative offices
  • Act as the primary liaison for academic affairs and faculty concerns for the college's two study-away programs

  • Ph.D. or other terminal degree; current faculty status is not required, and there are no teaching duties associated with the job
  • Progressively responsible experience in higher education administration preferred, with particular attention to areas within the Dean of the Faculty's portfolio; or at a minimum, several years of faculty experience including time spent serving on important faculty committees
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills
  • Interest in both collaborative and individual work
  • Proven ability to pivot and interest in multi-tasking
  • Appreciation of the benefits of working with our multi-vocal community of students, staff and faculty
  • Interest in developing and maintaining cross-functional partnerships and working collaboratively with a wide array of constituencies, with an appreciation of the dynamics of a small rural residential college campus
  • Ability to nurture an atmosphere of collegiality and inclusiveness
