Opening Details

The Special Assistant to the President serves as a trusted advisor on a variety of high-level projects, priorities, and initiatives and as a key partner in conceptualizing, framing, and problem-solving issues. The position is part of the president's senior leadership team (known as Senior Staff) and an Officer of the College. As Secretary of the Board of Trustees, they facilitate all aspects of board governance and priorities, including quarterly meetings. This highly collaborative position also serves as a key liaison for the President with external stakeholders and across the institution, the town, and the Berkshire region.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions, including but not limited to:
  • Provides the President with strategic advice, raises significant issues, and identifies approaches to resolve issues.
  • Leads high-level or sensitive concerns and requests on behalf of the President. Works with the President and the board as required.
  • Coordination of positive and supportive relationships with key constituents, including the Board of Trustees.
  • Oversees and coordinates the preparation and timely distribution of board materials.
  • Supports Trustee involvement at college events such as Commencement, Convocation, and Commencement.
  • As College Secretary, responsible for minutes, motions, legal documents, and committee assignments.
  • Establishes, nurtures, and sustains strong and highly collaborative relationships across the college and external community constituents, as well as engages with special projects of significance to the community.
  • Coordinates official college interactions with educational, economic and social development/justice organizations/agencies with a focus on such matters as housing, childcare, transportation, sustainability and energy planning, and business development.
  • Partners with the Chief Communications Officer on media inquiries and the coordination of presidential responses on critical and sensitive matters.
  • Convenes the Community and Government Affairs Task Force and serves on appropriate college committees.
  • Manages and develops the president's office and house staff (3.0 FTE).
  • Budget responsibility to the office, community relations, and the college marshall.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience:
  • A master's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience with 8+ years of professional, senior-level experience in or impacting a large, complex organization.
  • Responsible for driving key projects and initiatives with significant impact across the organization.
  • Familiarity with higher education and/or governmental issues is highly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • The ability to manage multiple, diverse assignments/projects simultaneously, respond diplomatically to diverse constituencies, handle sensitive situations and information with utmost discretion, and understand and solve complex problems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a strong ability to influence outcomes.
  • Ability to perform in a collaborative, dynamic, team-based environment.
  • High degree of integrity, confidentiality, and a strong ability to work with a wide range of individuals in a diverse community.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Skill in working with all campus stakeholders in a climate of openness and transparency, integrity, trust, mutual respect, and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with an ability to speak to a variety of audiences and transform ambiguity into clarity.
  • Excellent listening skills and the capacity and willingness to engage in intellectual debate and discussion.
  • Awareness and understanding of the role of faculty governance and college staff life.

  • Evening and weekend hours are occasionally required.
