The City of Pittsfield is seeking a qualified individual to fill one full-time Plumber position within the Maintenance Department. Under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance, the Plumber will maintain city owned buildings and schools. The successful candidate will possess thorough knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and techniques of the Plumbing Trade. In addition, knowledge of State and Local laws governing plumbing installations and repairs is required. The duties are to perform & supervise work in the installation and repair of heating, water supply, drainage & disposal system; related work as required. This is a skilled work at journeyman level involving responsibility for the proper installation & repair of plumbing & heating systems and performance of a wide variety of associated jobs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Installs & repairs water pipes and makes necessary connections, maintains plumbing systems, repairs & replaces defective & leaky water & drain pipes. 
  • Repairs & replaces valves, faucets, sinks, bubblers, tanks, fixtures, replaces gaskets and washers. 
  • Opens clogged drains, attaches pipe assemblies to walls, assemble, bolts or solders valves, couplings, pipe sections and other parts. 
  • Connects plumbing fixtures to outlets and seals connections. 
  • Lays out the working details and does skilled work, involved in altering, installing and repairing water & drainage systems, bathrooms, toilet equipment, heating and ventilating plants. 
  • Wipes joints in lead pipes. 
  • Does steam fittings and pipe fitting work with steel, iron, brass, copper and other types of pipe. 
  • Inspects & tests pipe lines & plumbing. 
  • Repairs thermostatic controls on heating & ventilating systems. 
  • Performs other manual duties related to plumbing work & will work in conjunction with other trades and laborers as necessary. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Thorough knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, & techniques of the plumbing trade and all Federal, State and Municipal Building Codes. 
  • Good knowledge of elementary plumbing theory. 
  • Skill in the application of this knowledge and handling of the tools of the trade. 
  • Ability to work from plans, sketches, specifications & blueprints. 
  • Sufficient physical strength to do heavy lifting. 
  • Experience as a journeyman plumber. 
  • Graduation from a standard Senior High School. 
  • Has worked in the field for at least five years. 
  • Possession of a Journeyman Plumbers License. 
  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license, Class D 

WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of Plumber the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent is required to operate machines, devices, tools, etc., used for plumbing; and move throughout the municipal office/building. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds from the ground to shoulder height.

HOURS

Monday – Friday, 40 per week

SALARY

Starting salary $22.78 - $25.64 per hour

Annual increases up to $31.53 per hour
