Part-Time Library Director - Town of Clarksburg - Clarksburg

The Town of Clarksburg, Massachusetts, is seeking an energetic, adaptable, and community-minded part-time Library Director to lead the day-to-day operations of the Clarksburg Library.

This is a hands-on leadership position. Because ours is a small community library, the Director works side-by-side with library staff and regularly assists patrons. The position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in a close-knit community while overseeing a broad range of library operations, including staff supervision, collection development, programming, budgeting, building maintenance, and community engagement.

Clarksburg is a town of approximately 1,650 residents nestled in the northern Berkshires, just north of North Adams, Massachusetts, and south of Stamford, Vermont.

The Clarksburg Library is a member of CW/MARS and is located adjacent to the K–8 Clarksburg School, providing an excellent opportunity for collaboration with students, teachers, and the school community

We are looking for a Director who enjoys working directly with people, values excellent customer service, and is excited to help shape the future of a small-town public library.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee daily library operations, including staff scheduling and supervision
• Work directly with patrons by providing circulation, reference, and general library services
• Manage the library budget, grants, purchasing, and state reporting requirements
• Maintain and develop the library’s print, media, and digital collections
• Coordinate community events, educational activities, and special programming
• Collaborate with the Board of Trustees, town officials, school personnel, and other community partners
• Ensure compliance with Massachusetts state library certification and funding requirements
• Maintain the library facility and coordinate building-related needs
• Support implementation of the library’s long-range plan and community goals
• Learn and effectively use library software and other technology systems for both internal operations and public services

Position Details:

Schedule: 25 hours per week
Salary: $22–$24 per hour

The Library Director reports directly to the Board of Library Trustees and works collaboratively with other town departments, committees, and community organizations.

• Bachelor’s degree required
• Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills
• Ability to work collaboratively in a small-team environment and comfortably take on a variety of responsibilities
• Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office; willingness and ability to quickly learn library software systems
• Experience in a library, educational, municipal, or other public-service setting preferred
• Demonstrated interest in community engagement, lifelong learning, and public service
• Ability to interact comfortably and professionally with patrons of all ages, town officials, colleagues, and school children
• Flexibility, initiative, and a hands-on approach to library service
