Position Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Principal, the Dean of Students assists administrators, teachers, parents, and students in resolving student attendance, behavioral, and disciplinary issues in a consistent, fair, and supportive manner. The Dean fosters a safe, positive, and inclusive school environment while supporting student success and well-being.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assist teachers, parents, and students in resolving non-academic student issues, including behavioral problems, attendance concerns, and social-emotional challenges.
  • Maintain accurate records of disciplinary actions in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and district policies.
  • Confer with parents, teachers, support personnel, and students to address discipline, attendance, and problem-solving matters.
  • Report to administrators, teachers, attendance staff, parents, and students regarding issues affecting student performance and conduct.
  • Recommend appropriate programs and interventions for students to address behavioral or attendance challenges.
  • Instruct and advise students on school rules, policies, and expectations to promote a safe and respectful learning environment.
  • Assist in arranging and coordinating tutorial support related to academic and behavioral needs.
  • Support administrators, teachers, and attendance staff in monitoring and improving student attendance.
  • Assist in the administration of in-school suspension programs, co-curricular activities, and other school-based behavioral interventions.
  • Arrange meetings with students, parents, teachers, and administrators regarding disciplinary matters.
  • Coordinate with community and government agencies regarding issues such as truancy or conduct concerns.
  • Assist in developing and implementing building policies and practices to ensure school safety and security.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding student discipline, bullying, harassment, and attendance.
  • Knowledge of student behavior management and conflict resolution techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents, staff, and community partners.
  • Skill in mentoring students and supporting professional development for staff related to non-academic student issues.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
    Massachusetts licensure as an Elementary Teacher or Principal/Assistant Principal required.
  • Prior experience as a building administrator, Dean of Students, or teacher of behavioral/developmental support preferred.
  • Experience working with at-risk students preferred
